Posted October 04, 2018 09:04:24When will the Houston Astros play the Washington Capitals?
That depends, at least according to the owner of the team who owns the Houston Texans, who said Thursday that the league office is likely to allow both teams to play at least one exhibition game against each other in the fall.
Hans Johnson said in an interview with Houston’s WWL radio that the Rangers and Capitals have reached an agreement to play an exhibition game for each team in 2019, but that the NHL is not yet ready to make a decision.
“We’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out, but the two teams have agreed to play a one-off exhibition game on the road in 2019,” Johnson said.
“And the other team hasn’t yet been given permission to do the same.”
The NHL said Thursday it expects to finalize a deal by the end of next week, but it is unclear how long it would take to do so.
The Capitals and Rangers played one exhibition at RFK Stadium in November.
The Oilers and Sabres also played one preseason exhibition in October.
The Oilers and Rangers play on opposite sides of the country, so the Capitals will likely have the edge.
The Sabres will play the Dallas Stars in a neutral-site game, and the Rangers will play in Columbus.
The Stars and Rangers were last on the schedule in 2018, but were able to earn home-ice advantage in the first round.
The Rangers have already played three exhibition games against each of their rivals, including the Capitals.
They will play a third game on Friday against the Montreal Canadiens at MTS Centre.
The Capitals have won two of their past three games in Houston, including a 4-2 overtime win on Oct. 4 that ended a six-game losing streak.
Johnson said the Caps are “pretty good” in their current form and expect to play well in the opener.
The Texans were the team that won the 2016 World Series with the New York Mets, who won the 2018 World Series.
The Texans were also the team to play in a series against the New Jersey Devils and Los Angeles Kings in 2019.
The Senators won the Cup with the Minnesota Twins in 1993.
The Rangers won it in 2006 with the San Diego Padres.
